Pamela Ruschman #19 on the 2020 Covered Bridge Art Studio Tour stop Oct. 9-11th

Pamela is best known for her bold and vibrant oil portraits of barnyard animals including cows, roosters and sheep.  Collectors say her paintings capture the personality of these furry and feathered friends.

She grew up on a dairy farm outside of Blanchardville, Wi.  As a young child, she fed the pigs and chickens as part of her daily chores and even helped raise orphan piglets under a warm heating lamp.  As she grew older, milking the cows and helping with crop harvest became part of her everyday life.  Needless to say, agriculture and the love of animals is in her heart.  She never imagined as a young child that these experiences on the farm would play such an important role in her painting career.

After more than a decade in the agricultural advertising industry, painting Wisconsin’s landscape and livestock has become her passion.  She uses both the alla prima (painting all at once) and plein air (in the open air) to influence her larger studio work.  Pamela adds, “Painting from life is such an important part of my process to provide information for my art.  Supplementing this with photography is necessary because it’s very difficult to tell a rambunctious rooster to hold a pose.”  

Drawing on her love of Wisconsin’s seasons, Pamela especially enjoys painting outdoors during the winter months.  It’s a quiet season, which suits her personality.

Often you will find Pamela driving down country roads searching for that next inspiration or setting up her easel with some friendly Wisconsin cows or snow filled landscape.

Mary Ellen Mueller holds a degree in art education from the University of Wisconsin Whitewater which included study in Florence Italy where she was introduced to the process of etching and the love of architecture.

She enjoys the detail of the etching process, the spontaneity and surprise effects of monoprints and the challenges of plein air painting. Mary Ellen enjoys commissions of architectural drawings of homes, buildings and landmarks.

Pamela Ruschman is an oil painter who grew up on a dairy farm in Southwestern Wisconsin.  The rolling hills, vistas and barns from this area provide continual inspiration.  After spending twelve years in the advertising industry, she decided to pursue the idea of painting full time.  Often, Pamela can be found plein air painting along a quiet country roadside or near a dairy farm capturing the livestock, landscape and beauty of Wisconsin on canvas.  In 2017, Pamela was chosen as the Wisconsin Collection Featured Artist for Milwaukee Public Television.

I paint because I love the challenge of looking at a familiar scene and simplifying it into shapes, colors and my own vision. I primarily paint “en plein air”.  Painting alla prima, with quick brush work and a limited palette, forces me to work spontaneously. I strive to give the viewer a quick snapshot of that particular moment in time; an impression of an effect of light I felt to be beautiful. I usually work on smaller canvases in order to be able to complete a painting in 2-4 hours capturing the sun before it moves on. I particularly enjoy painting the Wisconsin rural landscape and small towns in all four of our unique seasons: Winters, I am outside bundled up and painting very quickly before the paint turns too gummy.  Spring and Summer when the fields are full of life, the gardens are in full bloom and the warmth of the sun makes me feel alive with the paint brush. An added fun experience is painting while sitting in my little 13’ boat. And in Autumn when Wisconsin dons its coat of bright reds, oranges and yellows.
