Four of our tour artists won awards for " Best Body of Work " at the Cedarburg Artists Guild Annual Juried Exhibit !   The show hangs at the Cedarburg Cultural Center through Sunday, October 14.  We invite you to stop in and view the artworks.  This is a juried show and includes numerous other artists on the tour.

Your drive from studio to studio will most likely take you past Cedar Creek in Cedarburg .  The Columbia Flour Mill was built in 1845 by  Friedrich Hilgen and William Schroeder. Germans who came to Cedarburg by way of Charleston South Carolina . The mill was built on rock with limestone walls 3 or more feet thick .  In the lower level you can still view the water rushing through .

Downtown Cedarburg is full of historic stone buildings, mills and scenic walkways.  Cedar Creek flows through the town .  Take a break and enjoy a quick walk along the creek between the Wittenberg Woolen Mill and the Hilgen Grist Mill.

Renee Schreiner #3 on the 2018 Covered Bridge Art Studio Tour stop Oct. 12-14th

Renee Schreiner primarily works in acrylic paint using her native WI as her inspiration.
She will often do a series of paintings, such as winter scenes or whatever subject matter strikes her fancy at the moment.  When working on paintings Renee will be working on designing beaded jewelry.

Kandy Gibson #6 on the 2018 Covered Bridge Art Studio Tour stop Oct. 12-14th

Kandy Gibson is a utilitarian potter who creates pots that are visually pleasing and unique in character, but also useful in everyday life.  Each piece of stoneware pottery created reflects her enjoyment for throwing, carving, sketching, embellishing, creating and using. Most of her pieces are wheel thrown, but some are hand built.  The forms are usually organic in nature, which stems from her love of the balance observed in nature.

Jeremiah Backhaus is a Blacksmith. He became infatuated with metal at the age of 11, when he built his first forge and began a lifelong pursuit. Years later, the metal still holds a sway over him. Jeremiah has had the opportunity to work with some of the best smiths in the country; and proved he has learned by recently becoming a champion on the History Channel’s show, Forged in Fire.

Laurie Shovers #7 on the 2018 Covered Bridge Art Studio Tour stop Oct. 12-14th

Laurie Shovers' jewelry consists of fine, hand-woven beading stitched around anodized aluminum spools and shapes that she designs and has manufactured to her exacting specifications.   She then combines these shapes & spools with not only her bead weavings, but with other metals, stones, and found objects. This combination of diverse materials and processes result in unique, colorful, lightweight modern jewelry.  Her hope is that you like wearing it as much as she likes making it!

Gina Studelska #7 on the 2018 Covered Bridge Art Studio Tour stop Oct. 12-14th

Gina grew up in a family that lived in an unincorporated town in Wisconsin. As kids, they were always outside; painting their chins with dandelions, stringing catalpa flowers, planting marigolds from seeds collected last year, digging in sand, and collecting leaves, feathers, and rocks. She never tired of these simple things.  Family, faith, and nature often entwine as themes throughout Gina’s art.

Eco Printing with live botanicals onto fabric or paper, cyanotype, rust, wax, block printing, stitching, drawing, and other mark making techniques can be found in her work.

Sandra Pape is a mixed media self-taught artist.  Her work is expressionistic with layers of textual surface and a distinguishable style.  Figurative images of women and children are a reoccurring theme for her.

Katherine de Shazer #21 on the 2018 Covered Bridge Art Studio Tour stop Oct. 12-14th

Katherine de Shazer will be demonstrating the ancient technique of egg tempera painting as well as water gilding intertwined with iconography.  According to Katherine, as you view an icon, an “adjustment of the eye” is necessary in order to understand the iconic style.  Stop in and learn about the two tasks that iconic style attempts to convey.  You will have the opportunity to hear more about the workshops on iconography that she has presented to churches, art groups, museums, and other organizations.  The history of her artwork spans across iconography, stained glass, and mosaics.  She has also participated in juried art shows throughout Wisconsin. This ancient art is practiced using the egg tempera on a gesso-coated wooden board.  Egg yolk is mixed with vinegar or wine, water, and finely ground earth pigments like ochres and semi precious stones like lapis lazuli and hematite. This mixture is applied using a floating method alternating between translucent and opaque layers.   The results give a special luminosity or otherworldly quality that is highly prized in icons.

Icons—What are they? Why do they look the way they do? In this presentation you will  learn what icons are in the world of faith, what their historical significance is past and present, and how they are made. In particular you will learn of the ancient tradition of egg tempera painting which preceded oils, watercolor, and acrylic. All these painting mediums have something in common, the pigments.  Pigments found in the earth along with semi precious stones are finely ground to make the colors for painting—how is that done and how are they different?  These questions and many more will be answered for all ages.
